I'm mounting a gruppo that I have lying around on a cross bike but I've never done anything else besides road bikes so I noticed my down pull derailleur doesn't take a cable from above. Now, I've noticed a hole with thread a few cm down on the seat tube facing the rear. Is this for a sort of pulley to convert the top cable to a down cable? It seems ideally placed for it.
Anyone any experience with using down pulls as a top pull? Any pictures and info on cable routing on cross bikes would be usefull also.

Exactly! The Simon Burney book, Cyclo-Cross Training and Technique has a perfect image depicting what you are describing...however I'm currently without a scanner...can anyone else help out WebHead?

I managed to fix it with a pulley meant for guiding a cable to an internal gearing system. Works great.
