i was thinking about getting a cross bike and I wanted your guys' opinion on some good bikes. I want a frame mainly, to build up myself, and not to expensive. Any suggestions? Thanks,

Had you thought about using the frameset from a Flat Bar Road Bike? The Giant CRX3/4 has large clearance forks and V-brake mounts, it would not be that difficult to convert. http://www.giantbicycles.net/au/030.000.000/030.010.000.asp?year=2006&range=128

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. The Surly Cross Check frame caught my eye. I've been looking for something as an all rounder rather than a competetive cross bike though. I also used to enjoy the ride on my old steel moutain bike so thought I would like to give a steel frame a go again.
