Dear CW,
Having just lost my mother to cancer, I wanted to wear a Livestrong band
in her memory. Because of the shortage of bands through the official
channels I paid £6 for one on ebay. My close relatives on seeing the band
wanted one for themselves, so I ended up paying £30 for five in total, but
instead of receiving the money I paid out for myself, I asked if they donate
the cash to the local hospice, but that's not all.
My manager at work also saw the band and asked about its relevance. After I
explained, he told me that our company has a "matched giving" scheme whereby
any money raised for charity by an employee will be effectively doubled. So
these 5 bands originally costing five dollars have ended up raising £60 for
a local hospice long after the LAF had sold them!
