I'm going to Italy in May 2006. I have my plane trip booked, and I have my bike. What do I do for the next 3 weeks ? I would like to visit as many iconic Italian places as I can. Has anyone got details of when they did this ? Any route details would be much appreciated.
If you are flying United, you can fly into Rome and out of Milan for the same price. I would fly to Rome and see the sights. Ride straight up the middle of Italy to Florence. Looks of great towns to see between Rome and Florence. Head west out of Florence to Pisa and on to Cinque Terra. Don't miss Cinque Terra. I would then take a train to Venice. From Venice it up to the Alps and over to the Lake District, espcially Lake Como. Lake Como to Milan. If you can squeeze it in, any of the islands, like Corsica is nice. You can take the ferry from Genoa. You didn't say if you are going self contained or credit carding it.
Thanks for all that info. I agree with your route. I'm not so sure about the Alps. I certainly want to include Cinque Terra in my plan. Why train to Venice. I've not checked the distance, but do you think it is too far ? You say 'United'. I'm in Australia, and am flying with Qantas. I'm sure I could have arrived at Rome and left from Milan, but why. After 3 weeks (which is what I have given myself), I don't really care where I leave from. I'll probably visit Milan though. I was thinking about training down south to Naples, Pompei, Amalfi Coast, then training back to Rome. 'self contained' ? No. I'm going solo, and will use plastic.

We visited Tuscany last year. Have a look at www.nickcoyne.com/eur04/ for a short diary.
