  1. I've just got back from a week in Munster, Germany, definetly one of the most cycle friendly cities in Europe. Great cycle lanes separate from the road with their own traffic lights. Motorists have to give way to cyclists and there's some fantastic cycling through tree-lined routes circling the city.
Virtually everyone was cycling. I saw plenty of mothers taking their toddlers to school in cycle trailers, pensioners out for bike rides. It was a real eye opener about what can be achieved with foresight, focus and investment.
Cyclist and motorist appeared to exist in a universe of mutual respect. If you get the chance spend a few days in Munster for a great cycling experience, you can hire bikes and most hotels have their own.

  2. it looks like the City is close to the border with the Netherlands, i guess they learnt about bike commuting from them.
