If anyone is cycling up here then be aware that several roads and one of the bridges are closed to vehicles for the whole of the weekend. This includes bicycles. The Swing Bridge and the roads around the Sage and the Hilton are closed to vehicles but not pedestrians. The Tyne Bridge is closed to pedestrians as its pavements are fenced off and thus the shared use cycle track is closed, the roadway of the bridge is however open to vehicles. There are also numerous vehicle checkpoints on all approaches to Newcastle and Gateshead. Anyone finished a C2C in Newcastle on Sunday may be in for a bit of walking. The Northumbria Police website has a map of the closures somewhere.

I don't know the bridge at all - what is the sense in trying to stop peds but not cars??

There may be a specific prohibition, I don't know. There is a shuttle bus being used to get peds across.

It's because the bridge is a high level one. It crosses areas where delegates might be in getting from the Hilton, where they are staying, to the Sage, where the conference is. They want to stop access to the edge of the bridge so they are fencing off the pavements.
