I was just asked to give a presentation to adult Boy Scout Leaders on biking with their Troops. Looking for ideas on how to energize scouts to get out and ride their bikes. Most of our Troops bike the C&O Canal which is relatively flat but what about the unit that has a few boys get about 5 miles into the ride and decide they've gone far enough? Thanks!

My 21 year old son is a Eagle Scout, Asst. Scout Master and a triathlete. If you want i can ask him if he minds if I give you his email address and i'm sure he has plenty of ideas.

In the months prior to our tours, we always had several wamup rides. There were six weekend rides and attendance to three of them were mandatory for any scouts who were going to participate in the tour. The first ride was 10 miles and then we added mileage for each successive ride until we got to the 30 mile length which was our planned daily mileage. Attendance on the last ride was also mandatory for the tour participants so that they could see what distance they were going to be expected to ride. This way we were able to screen out who had the ability to ride in the tour and it also weeded out the scouts who did not want to ride that distance.

The best option just might be offering more such rides. As the boys see it and hear it about it more often they may be drawn to it more. That's how cycling grows.
