  1. As discussed before, I've been trying to find appropriate bike
insurance, and now it's contents renewal time. However, none of the
contents insurers seem to really do what I need, or charge so much that
I would be better off putting the money aside in case the bike is
stolen. Others have discovered that CTC insurance doesn't actually
provide much cover for the very high premium.

So, has anyone had direct experience of Cycleguard insurance? They do
require me to have a lock from their approved list, which isn't too
onerous, and importantly they will cover my bike whilst away on
car/camping holiday with it, which CTC don't cover.

I use them and never had any problems - but I've never had to claim.

I was knocked off a while back and thought I'd done some serious
damage so asked if I was covered by the insurance for that - I was -
but I didn't need to claim anything in the end as a friend took a look
at it and sorted it out in 5 mins!
However, the chap on the phone first of all insisted that I had to
have my bike examined by a bike shop and a report sent to them before
any repairs could be done, which wasn't possible as it was bank
holiday Monday and the LBS was shut on the Tuesday as well. It took a
lot of convincing that I needed to get any problems fixed ASAP because
I used my bike to go everywhere and in the end they said I could do
that but they might not pay for the repair. From what my friend has
been telling me it's similar to how car insurance works.

Not normally. In most cases they're happy for minor repairs needed to
get roadworthy to be done ASAP, even at the roadside before it's
reported if it will mean the difference between driving home and
having to get recovered to a garage (often at the insco's expense).

    Hopefully, nor will I!

If you were knocked off, couldn't you have claimed off the person who
knocked you off (assuming this was a car driver!)

To be honest though, my primary concern is theft of the bike whilst I'm
away on holiday, and the bike is in/on a car. It's surprising how many
insurers don't cover that, including the CTC unless you actually have
the bike hidden inside a van[1] and physically locked to it somehow.

[1] Or a very big car where the bike can be totally hidden from view.
