I don't think it's a question of people feeling safer out of public
transport; more that for a period there wasn't any public transport.
Maybe some will come to love the cycling and not go back to public
transport but I expect when every thing's sorted out the status quo will
be resumed.

It's because there wasn't any public transport after the blasts and the
clever people bought bikes to get home on.

once autumn and winter hit, all the fair weather cyclists disappear and
only the couriers and the hardcore remain =)

the potholes and the rain are too draining.
visibility is bad and the black cabs are manical in the wet =(

the average punter will see the queue for the bus and tube and will be
compeled to join it...
