Consider this your good fortune. I locked up my bike with a Hardlock Rapper, tied to an iron
stairwell in a locked communal residential hallway in Edinburgh. Either through a faulty closing
door or door lock, thieves got in overnight and stole a number of bikes. They probably went thorough
mine with a large wire cutter, I may as well have been tied up with string. The irony being that a
number of equally expensive bikes remained, they all had D-Locks.

One very common way of nicking bikes from common stairwells in Edinburgh is just to smash the cast
iron railings that the bike is locked to. If they have been "improved". i.e. original attractive
railings replaced with boring steel rods, then the trick seems to be to whack the top or bottom of
the rod with a bloody great hammer and pop the ends out.

In other words, locking bike to communal stairwells isn't very safe however you do it (plus other
residents can get a bit fed up of tripping over them/squeezing past them and exact their own revenge
on the tyres).

I don't think it's the publickness of the location, but the length of time and regularity of use
of a location that puts a bike at risk. A secure place at work is a greater risk than the high st
for 30 mins.

Once a crook gets to know where a bike is kept, for how long, and locked with what, it's not too
difficult to go prepared for theft.
