CW bullish about London start for 2007 TdF

The week's Cycling Weekly is pretty bullish about the chances of a London
start, and presumably at least one stage after the Prologue, in 2007. One
of the press conferences booked for Jan 24th or Feb 10th may confirm it.

In the tradition of this country, the event will be completely mobbed,
everyone will go out and buy racing bikes, everything will be about cycling
and a week later ... nothing.

"London to get Tour de France start next year

Both The Independent and Cycling Weekly report that London will be graced by
Le Tour in 2007. This has been surmised by the not altogether clandestine
announcement that there will be Paris and London press conferences later
this month and in February"

they'll all be on eBay ;-)

I think we know this is what will happen, we Brits can't concentrate on
one sport for more than 2 weeks at a time {1}, but it's got to be a
good thing.

{1} cricket excepted; it takes that long to play one match

Yippee! Let's hope they're planning a route through Kent

I won't care. It's Limousin's turn to have a couple of stages, so that's
where I'll be a week after the start ;-)

Friends have a house there y'see, and we have a jolly Tour tour when it
passes nearby. Non of my three working bikes are UCI legal, but I'll
watch the racing anyway.

Yup. It's great. We can come down and visit the relatives and do all
the touristy things with no crowds. Lyme Regis Beach in early July is
empty..

Just lots of school trips in London when we do the museums.

This was the original idea; out through the Stratford Olympic village
and back over the QE2 bridge; but it might come back through south
Essex now (perhaps they should be told)

I certainly hope so, I was on duty when they rode through 'smuf, a right
pain in the **** with the ruddy caravan causing most problems....

No, there might be a lot of spectators (mainly casual) - there will be a lot
of special visitors (mainly foreign) - there will be few extra bikes sold
(certainly not racing) and two days later there will be nuffink.

Remember, we sell (say) 1 to 1.5 million bikes every Christmas - how many of
these have you seen on our roads today, 18 days later?

Like tennis in Wimbledon Fortnight. Aren't you rather going against
tradition by starting now?

I am willing to wager that the current Frenzy of support for Clicky-Ba
will dwindle back to early-2005 levels should our Brave Boys get duffed
by the Base Orztrylians next winter...

Or sooner if they come a cropper in Nagpur Mohali and Mumbai. :-(

Given the recent hoo-hah about ticket availability for the next Ashes
series, in spite of being well and truly slaughtered by Pakistan, I am
of a mind that the only test matches which matter are those against the
Base Orztrylians...

According to cyclingnews.com: "Stage 2 would run towards the east
coast, via Tunbridge Wells and Folkestone, then the Tour circus would
be moved back to France via the Channel Tunnel."

Oooh, nice. Since we're acquaintance dropping, I'll be trotting off to St
Meen le Grand (Brittany) this July as I have friends there. It's a start
town this year. Hometown of Louison Bobet, you know. It's also on the
Paris-Brest-Paris route, so I'll be doing some reconnaisance as well.
Intending to kip at their place en route in 2007.
