I got advice that if swimming more than 1 h I should have a glucose drink or else I'd collapse--sounds fine to me. But if I'm feeling really flabby and I'd rather use up that fat tissue hanging from my belly, I'd like to avoid drinking extra energy. Is the best thing to do taking breaks after every 1 h or so and let my body have time to get at the fat reserves, then continue?
I swim for an hour and a half without drinking or eating anything during that period. I drink about 16 ounces of water before the workout. If I drink anything (sports drink or even water from a bottle) during the workout I get indigestion.

Needing to get some carb durig exercise depends on the intensity. If you exercise at an aerobic pace you'll burn fat and you can keep going w/o getting a carb supplement. However, if you increase the intensity towards the aerobic threshhold, you'll be burning glycogen. Stores will last about 45 minutes to an hour. After that, your blood sugar will drop and you'll feel weak and will not be able to continue exercising. So, eating during exercise depends on intensity. If you go hard, you'll last about an hour without carbs. If you go easy, you'll be able to go much longer without them.
