If it's over about $500 you usually have to pay something. Although I've
brought in bike frames worth about $600 and haven't had to pay anything at
all. My brother got some golf clubs from America for about $500 and had to
pay 10% GST.

if you are buying it in person and can get it boxed up, preferably in a
old-used box from the LBS, and can make it look like an un-new bik
(maybe stick a computer, stickers on it?) then you can say its you
personal bike from touring or whatever. You shouldnt have to pa
anything other than the standard (if any. Qantas dont charge anythin
beyond $20 if you are travelling with it)
