Just out of curiosity, are there places in Australia (preferably Perth) who do custom paintjobs for bikes and could inject a bit of quasi Italian style into a dull blue Trek? Is it expensive?

ask yer LBS (localBikeShop) need to factor in getting bike stripped down (gar taken off) no idea about Perth but $150-300 would see a good job done

any powdercoater will do the job for couple of hundred. Ring Quantum bikes (in North Perth) if you want it done by a framebuilder.

check out some of the "bling-bling" custom lowrider places. Some of those guys are air-brush Michelangelo's but you will pay for the privilege (500 -> many $k). Alternatively, I had my track bike redone at an automotive place with paint leftover from another job. Took about 3 weeks and cost $300 including beadblasting to clean the old paint off. Still, getting super glossy Ducati red leftovers was worth it ;-)
