Basically this is the last 5 miles or so of the ride and due to the darkness we didn't see the old trail alignment marked in blue above. It was almost all uphill, not a pleasant site, from where the trail gets closest to Big Tujunga Rd at the green X to the top of the 2 switchbacks towards the right where we dropped onto the road. Clearly we would have knocked off at least 1/2 hour if we had caught that shortcut.
One positive note was that I was kind of stoked to make the 2nd to last switchback given the darkness. Almost made the last one but wasn't interested in trying it again.

It was in that last saddle before getting right over the road. I bet we missed it because we were in a spot where we could see enough to ride and were too busy concntrating on the trail. Maybe right before that short steep up in the white DG?

Yep, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was right there. There was that wide spot in the trail.
I'm thinking when we do Stone Cyn instead of riding up Big Tujunga we could avoid the road for a little ways by going up the shortcut and then doing that section paralleling Big Tujunga to the new trailhead. It would be a nice diversion from the tweakers on the road.

Yep, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was right there. There was that wide spot in the trail.
