compared to those caused by alu or steel forks

Haven't seen any data on the relative failure rates of steel forks vs CF
forks, but I've seen two riders suffer reasonably serious injuries when
their carbon fork blades snapped while they were riding...doesn't stop
me having two bikes with carbon forks though.

I've never seen a steel fork fail in such a spectacular fashion. I had
one once where the steerer tube started to come loose in the fork crown,
but that just started feeling like the headset was loose, and when I
found the headset wasn't loose, I looked further and found the fault
with the bike on the workstand rather than out on the road.
