type maps) by uploading data from your PC to your GPS.
What I was thinking of doing next was taking the database
of surveyed paths and uploading it back to the GPS, so that
the GPS would contain digitised footpaths. I am aware that
you can upload routes to the GPS, however taking the Garmin
Etrex as an example, a maximum of just 20 are allowed. I
was thinking of a far larger-scale thing - a full digital
map of a particular area to display on your GPS. So, for
example, you could upload all paths within a 5 mile radius
of Winchester to your GPS, and use that data to guide you
when out walking. In other words, a "pocket Freemap" to go
on your GPS.
I think that this has been done already for OS data, i.e. I
think you can (for a significant fee) upload OS-surveyed
paths to your GPS) but the difference with my idea is that
the data is free and not subject to restrictive licencing.
I'm imagining the way of doing this is to convert the
database of surveyed waypoints to the format used in
Mapsource products.
Anyone got any suggestions for how to go about this?
