CRC Zinc it for painting steel frames?

Has anyone tried CRC Zinc it as a primer layer? They've been released here in New Zealand in several colours now and I'm wondering whether it would be any different from ordinary spraypaint.

I'm planning to sand down the frame, apply CRC Zinc it, then the clear coat.

Hi fellow NZer and Trademe sports forum poster....:)
You're unlikely to need a zinc based primer(do you mean primer or undercoat?) for the outside of a steel bike frame. The don't really rust from the outside in and only in very small ways when there are chips in the paint(which can happen to any paint)
The Zincit may not take the clearcoat well and in the short term - it may chip easily etc.
You're better off with a traditional sequence of metal primer(very thin - don't sand), undercoat(sand) colourcoat, decals/transfers and finally clearcoat(2 pot).
Find out about HPC(you might know someone who's used it or look in special finishes in the yellow pages) - High Performance coatings.
Very hard finish in a range of colours - they will apply it too.
Hammerite(and the same brand but non hammered finish look) spray on coatings work well.

What about these cold, windy days? Not much of an incentive to get out on the bike is it?

Well, thanks for your advice. The plan has been shelved for now anyway, a chat with a chemistry professor who told me that aluminium (from the stem) would corrode in preference to zinc basically leaves that idea dead in the water.

Wow, another trade me sports forum poster. What's your user name over there?

Hi.
I'm Trogedon.
Thanks for the thanks....

Sounds a bit strange re the stem. What about some copper grease on the stem to isolate it(to a large degree) from the steel?

If you're after advice or whatever - take caadrider's words with a pinch of salt.
I know Rob and know people who know him too and he's prone to exaggeration...needing to prove he's right all the time. He knows lots about cycling(more than me) but not everything!

I hope your cycling goes well for 07:) .

I'm just getting back into it after having a weird stomach bug for the last 2 weeks or so.
I'm going to do the Wild West and the Rodney Rabbit ride and hopefully be a bit fitter and better prepared(i.e. knowing the courses better) for the Counties Manukau season.
