I've been dieting and exercising all winter. I purchased an exercise bike to get my HR up. By the time spring came I was ready to buy a real bike. I purchased a Gary Fisher Tarpon. This is the first bike I've had since my Free Sprit from highschool. I don't really need a MTB, I bought this because I never did like the bent over ride of a road bike and the bigger tires just seemed more practical. Which brings me to my question. The crankset is 48/38/28. What can this be changed to get more speed while retaining the hill climbing ability? Or should I consider a different cassette? I wish I would've found this site BEFORE I purchased a bike!

Thanks Dan
Acording to the Fisher site, you have a 13 small cog.If correct, a casette with a 11 or 12 small cog and same big cog will give more top speed and won't hurt the low end. The crank rings appear riveted together, and if so,your only option with the crank is to replace it with one with a 50 tooth big ring which you FD would likely still handle.
