I am considering a new cycling computer. I currently have on old Cat Eye (about 4 functions) and a Polar HR.
I wonder, is having electronics that will download data to my home computer worthwhile? I'm a retired old guy. So time isn't a problem.
I could get one unit such as a Garmin that would do it all. And toss my Polar. Any opinions on the value.
Personality hint: I used to fly commercial jets, so I've grown beyond the 'techie' stage of life and prefer simplicity.
i wouldn't incorporate too much tech on your handlebars, leave that for your IPHONE or your BLACKBERRY so to speak... i would jump into newer versions of your existing CATEYE AND POLAR, incidently those are the brands i use. i like the posibility to display heart rate as a percentage for example, and cadence readings, for the rest it is all quite similar. Memory and archives are also handfull, so once a week or once a month you can transfer your records into your agenda, notebook and/or personal computer,
Thanks. One issue I wondered about, is it worth the extra $$$$ to have a device that will transfer the data to a home computer? The other is should I migrate away from separates.
I think I'll keep my Polar S-210, since it stores files, and simply swap out the Cateye to get speedometer with a larger screen and also has altimeter functions. I plan to do a lot of climbing. I don't want all that data on one screen to decipher.
My bike was in storage for 5 years while I was away. I got everything lubed and aligned and, guess what, the batteries in the Cateye speedometer still function. After 5 years in a dark shed.

it is not a question of money, if you want to try them go ahead, the GARMIN unit has a cool look and all the functionalities.
