  1. I would like to get comments about the relation
among the following times for crawl. They were made in two recent
    masters competitions. (I'm a 35 y.o. male)

    a) 800m (50m pool): 12:11 (1st 400m: 6:11, 2nd 400: 6:00)

    b) 400m (25m pool): 5:27

    c) 100m (25m pool): 1:02

    Thank you in advance,

    Jordi

  2. Hi Jordi,

have a look at http://www.fina.org/main/records/records.htm, there you will
find all master`s worldrecords. And at http://www.lenweb.org/records.htm the
    European Records.

    Don´t be too disappointed ...

  3. Hello Udo, thanks for your answer
but perhaps I wasn't able to explain
myself. I'm not interested in records :-)

My interest is in the relationship
among my times. I mean, if you do
1:05 in 100 free, then what should
you do in 400, or 800?

  4. The relationship between your times depends on the type of swimmer you
are. A 1:02 in free seems like you should be able to swim a 4:40 for
the 400, 1:10 should be an easy pace for you to hold up.
Try practicing at that pace more. When I was preparing for a 500, I
wanted a 1:05 pace so that's the pace that I did my workouts at. Ex. 20
X 100 on 1:20 finishing every 100 in 1:05. That worked really well for
me but I'm not a coach.
These are approx. meters(sc) times for me:
    25.5 (50), 55.0 (100), 2:00 (200), 5:25 (500)
So with a 1:02 you are looking at 4:35ish(400) and probably a sub 10
minute 800. A 12 minute 800 in a long course pool is a pretty good
    time.

  5. I appreciate your comments.
We'll my own diagnostic is that I have
a great unbalance: much better in sprints or much worse in distance.

    I found the page

    http://www.swimnews.com/Ranking/ips.jhtml

with a point calculator, and it yields the idea you said.

But, I think it is not completely accurate for master swimmers who
haven't swum in their childhood. (Me and others started swimming
    at 25 y.o.)
We all exhibit such sort of unbalance (better in sprints than in
distance), but in my case is much more important: I beat them
in 100m but they are 40 o 50 seconds faster than me in 800.

I'm guessing if my problem is:

+ technique: people says it looks pretty good, but I suspect it goes
    poor when I'm tired
    + train the pace

    I train about 15km a week in 5 workouts. I think I have enough
endurance, but for instance I can't do 800 series at 12min. (25m course)
*easily* (say 60%), I have to "suffer" a little more (80-85%)

    Well, I'll keep trying
