I am about to buy my first road bike to train for a century ride at the end of the summer. With my new bike, I will primarily be doing rides anywhere from 25 to 100 miles, and maybe some mini-triathlons (with the biking portion not to exceed 25 miles).
I am not particularly worried about the difference between a compact and classic frame for my shorter rides, but am I going to be unhappy with a compact frame if I am doing a century?
I dont see how a compact frame would effect you over a longer ride any differently to a standard frame.
There has been a lot of marketing behind the compact geometry being stiffer, stronger, lighter etc. but it seems that after the trend came in a few years ago there is now just as many teams changing back to traditional frames than those opting for the compact version. I would assume that you might be worried about comfort over the longer distances on a compact frame due the the apparent increase in stiffness? If this is the case then i would suggest that you have nothing to worry about, as the longer seatpost required for a compact frame adds enough flex to create a similar comfort level as the traditional design. The main factor/s behind your decision should not be whether the frame is compact or not. Look at how many pro teams ride on compact vs traditional frames and then consider if they are doing upwards of 1000km weeks would they still be riding these?
Choose your bike on value/looks/weight/ride but not on the geometry as i feel this is a moot point.

I've owned several bikes, Including Bianchi & Colnago but I bought the first Giant TCR the ONCE replica in 99 and I love that bike. The bike is extremely comfortable, and I've gone to Duathlon World Champs with it and even done Zofingen Powerman in Switzerland and never regreted it.
Last year I bought the new Carbon Giant and that bike is alot more responsive both in the climbs and in the sprints. I've done no Duathlons or TT but I guess it will be a great bike too. The only negative side of the bike is if I used my Mavic Cosmics and you get a cross wind then its a very difficult bike to ride.
