Cold weather pants or cuff guards

i usually just pull my sock over the cuff...looks silly, i'm told, but it works well

As the handle suggests, I do some fishing. I use the bike, among other things, to get up and down the rivers. I'm usually wearing waders and Korkers while riding the bike. I also used to get some rubbing on the largest cog on the front chainring. Replacing that largest gear with an oversize bash guard helped some. Also, I use some oversize neoprene cuffs. They cover from top of shoe to almost mid-calf. They keep the waders snug to the leg. Less rubbing. I don't notice them at all. In the past, I also wore BDU pants and large boots a lot. While in Germany, I rode a bike to work everyday, except in winter. Three years. I can't remember ever having problems with rubbing on the front gears.
