Finally, after more than a week of being off a uni, I pulled the Coker
out once again to try to tame the beast. I had just purchased a new set
of elbow pads and knee pads and a pair of Harbinger wrist
supports/gloves and decided to test them.
On my previous rides I quickly realized wearing my 661 knee/shin guards
and 661 elbow/forearm guards was a little overkill for riding the Coker.
On every dismount, I found myself out of striking range of the pedals
making the need for shin protection less of a priority.
The first few rides on the Coker, I cheated a little by installing 170
cranks, hoping to make it feel more like a giant MUni and reducing the
learning curve. It did seem to make the transistion from the 24x3 a
little easier.
Today, I installed the original 150's and headed for the park near
the house with the 1.2 mile road arond the small lake. After about 5 or
6 attempts to freemount the Coker, I finally got the big wheel rotating
with the shorter cranks. Within 100 yards, I found myself running in
front of the uni, hoping it wouldn't catch me. Another 3-4 freemounnt
attempts and I was back in the saddle cruising along thinking I was
finally in control. WRONG!!
Within the first lap of the lake, I UPD'd probably 5 or 6 times. Not
being one to give up, I kept riding my 1.2 mile laps around the lake
reducing my UPD's by one or two per lap until I finally finished my 4th
lap UPD-free.
On the positive side, my freemounting on the Coker greatly improved
today and I was landing about 1 out 2 attempts and even nailed a few on
the first try.
BTW, luckily, I didn't get to test any of my protective gear, as I was
able to "run out" of every UPD 😄 😄
