Police arrest three, seize performance-enhancing drugs
January 14, 2004
PARIS (AP) -- Three people connected to the Cofidis cycling team were arrested, and police seized
performance-enhancing drugs at the home of a former rider.
Former Cofidis rider Robert Sassone was detained after police said they found male hormones, the
endurance-booster EPO and amphetamines at his home in southern France. Cofidis is one of France's
top cycling teams.
``There were a few pills ... testosterone, a little EPO, but nothing of huge consequence and not in
great quantities,'' police spokeswoman Catherine Briguet said Wednesday.
Two others associated with Cofidis, former rider Marek Rutkiewicz and current team assistant
Boguslaw Madejak, were also arrested. All three were expected to be placed under formal
investigation, one step short of being charged.
