Regarding the topic at the top, I would suggest:
1. Type of grease: While any typical bicycle bearing grease seems
fine, these hubs can get relatively hot, easily above 100-degrees F,
by extended braking. An automtive grease would be adquate for the
bearings and better able to take the heat.2. Grease application: I pack cages, cups, driver and clutch heavily.
Brake shoes also need grease, but I do not fill the entire cavity.3. Grease retarder spring: Yes
4. Re-bend worn spring: As with any spring, it helps, but only for a
short time. If it can be re-bent it means it is fatigued and needs
replacement.Off topic:
I could have sworn I replied on May 6, 2004, to the "How to tighten
back pedal style breaks?" thread, but my first comments ended up
here…I don't know why.
