It's something which members here may have a view on.
A few years back I started helping out with some coaching with the local club. And recently I started to think about the coaching I got when I was racing all those years ago.
Most racing cyclists would concede that the relationship between coach and rider is a crucial aspect of racing. Looking back, I can now appreciate the effort and interest taken by coaches in my day. These guys were retired competitive cyclists who gave up their free time to train us. The lessons they imparted - how to train, what tactics to use in races, what diet to follow - helped me and my teammates. But more importantly, these guys imparted lessons that applied to life outside cycling - like giving 100% to the task at hand, being disciplined with regard to turning up on time for races/training, working as part of a team to achieve a result. These simple virtues applied equally to cycling and life in general. I believe that it is no co-incidence that several of my coaches were not only successful in cycling terms, they were very successful in their commercial/business lives as well.
I'd be interested to hear of members view about their coaches.
Where are these free coaches? Mine's costing $150 a month.
The coach relationship for me has been a great improvement. I have more faith in the program than if I was designing it myself. And am less likely to miss a session (I am a relative beginner however). But I assume you are probably looking for more anecdotes about coaching relationships in one's junior years. Not 40 year old guys getting serious about a new hobby like myself.

All of the coaching at our club is voluntary. Apart from fuel expenses to get members to and from races. And that was the way it was when I raced as a junior.
I was asking the question more on the basis of what peoples experiences were with coaches. In our setup, coach/riders wasn't a commerical relationship (ie having to pay a coach). Ex-riders coached because they were interested in putting something back ni to the sport.
