Clipless Problems. Please Help

I know this is probably a realitively stupid question but i would like to ask it. I have Shimano clipples pedels that I jsut put on my bike. As im sure more of you know, they come with the black pedels on one side and then are open on the other side. I am having a very hard time getting the black part off. I know its only like 1/10 of a pound each, but i would still like them off since i never use them. Any help would be greately appreaciated. Thank you, Brian
