Anyone got any guidance on setting the cleat position on road shoes? Do you set them all the way forward, back or in the middle? Where do I start?

Place them directly under the ball of your foot. And positioned with the point of the cleat pointed toward the middle point of the front of the shoe. At least that is a good starting point. Make adjustments from there after a few hundred miles if necessary.

or a few hundred feet as the case may be. if it's really bad, you'll know it right away.

actually, let me qualify that last--if your pedal system has very little float, you may feel some problems after a short while (and i've seen it take less than 20 yards for some people to realize there's a maladjustment).
there must be a web site somewhere with graphics that help people do this thing...
