Cleaning after a downpour

I have heard of people cleaning the bike down and
hitting the drive chain with some WD 40. Sounds
reasonable as it should displace any water still
hanging around but as it's not a real lubricant you
would want to lube everything pretty soon after.
Or should I stay right away from it?

Apart from washing lube out of the chain, your bike (and chain) will also pick up all kinds of sand and grit from the road. It's easy enough to rinse off the frame, but the chain will need cleaning and re-lubing. If you don't clean it, it will grind noisily.

Oil chain. If cosmetics worry you, wipe it all down.

Also, store the bike upside down for a few hours so any
water that has got into the bottom bracket drains out
(presuming that you haven't got one of those slotted ones).
