well, I had my bike for about a year now (not to many miles though, about 1k), and it never got a thorough cleaning. somehow the brushes are of little appeal to me. I've seen this picture of a mechanic putting up on the bikes a water pressure cleaner, but maybe the pros don't care to much about the long term well being of the bikes... and mine is steel... so I guess my question is: is water a no-no ?! and I mean plenty of water !!! any suggestions for a big-no-messy-brushes-cleaning ?! thanks for your time.

well if you use water on steel the rule is use very warm to hot soapy water and dry afterward

Yeah, i really don't see that it's necessary to use water.
Don't you just hate cleaning around the bottom brachet, behind the
chain-rings? 🙂 And if you have fancy lugs....yuk
