Dry rot will show as tiny cracks ... usually in the
sidewalls, first. As for general tire wear and road
worthiness, it depends on the type tires you're running. If
they have tread and you get down to where the tread is
minimal, it's probably time to replace them. If they're
smooth tires like most racing tires, when the tread gets
really thin you'll see the fabric casing begin to appear in
spots here and there down the center of the tire. The
instant you see that, change the tire. Maybe you won't see a
fabric casing, but you'll see another color material showing
under what's left of the tread. Same difference. Replace the
tire immediately.
