It's a fairly good axiom over here not to touch anything under UKP 150-200, but what are the prices for comparable quality bikes in the US? I am trying to make some suggestions for an adult leftpondian to buy a "first bike" and don't want to either encumber them with a tank, or think it's too pricey.

$250-$300 seems to be rock bottom for a decent quality bicycle, plus local sales tax. As usual, last year's models can sometimes be found for a discounted price. Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target are among the stores to avoid at all costs. Depending on which part of leftpondia the friend lives in he might find this link useful: www.rei.com . Bicycles and all other kinds of gear for non-motorized sports.
