Challenger crusade hybrid - would you recommend it?

One of my friends wants to buy an used city bike and he recently came across a relatively cheap offer of a Challenger Crusade ''26. The bike itself is in good condition, except it doesn't have the mudguards, has 6 gears and V-brakes. It's a hybrid bike actually, which is important for my friend, because he often runs errands in the villages around his city (it's actually more a town, there are less 50 thousand inhabitants). He wants my opinion before making the purchase, and I thought it can't hurt to consult forums about it. I have already recommended to him that he should insist on a trial ride, but what else is important, in your opinion?
