Other way about.You dont want to be in the the outer chain ring and be on the smallest gear at the back(largest cog) and
you dont want to be in the small chainring and be in the biggest gear(smallest cog).
Doing this puts the chain at an angle and wears away the cogs and you lose power.You want to have the chain as straight as possible.Stand directly behind the bike and look at the angle the chain is it.Try different gears and check the angle the chain is at.Just try to keep it out: Big Chain Ring-Big Cog and Small Chainring-Small Cog
