  1. I'm looking for a chainring set for my Marin Muirwoods bike. It's th
standard MTB sizing with 26" wheels

I need as full a range as possible i.e. 48T, 34T, and 22T or somethin
like that. This is so that on the flat, I can move quickly but when I d
mountains with a full pannier load, I am able to move into easier gears

I've looked at chainreactioncycles.co.uk and wiggle.co.uk and neithe
seem to have anything that would meet my needs

Is there anybody else out there who might be able to provide me wit
    what I need

    Thanks, Danny

offer a 26/36/48 Deore for 45 squid. Not exactly what you asked for but they
also offer an 11-34 9sp cassette which you could combine with it for £25

That is a non-standard size, and you'd have to build it yourself by
replacing rings on a standard chainset. The main problem would then be
that you would be well outside the range of teeth difference
recommended for the front derailleur. Depending upon how the front
derailleur was setup, you'd have a problem either shifting between the
inner and middle ring, or the middle and outer ring

Mid-range and expensive MTB chainsets are normally 22/32/44. Shimano
XTR is available in all sorts of sizes, but costs £lots. Budget ones
seem to be 22/32/42. Older chainsets are available with larger
chainrings, but most places only sell "Compact Drive" these days, so
you'd be looking for something used, that may or may not be truly
compatible with the rest of the drivetrain. The Shimano Deore chainset
is available in 26/36/48 from Chainreaction and Bikedock among others.
You'd have a fairly high gear on the flat on the road, but you might
notice the loss of low gears off-road. You might get a cassette with a
particuarly low range - they are available in 9-speed down to 12-34
    when 11-30 is more normal.

If you have wishbone (i.e bendy) chainstays like most modern MTBs, in
order to allow for larger tyres, you may find that the outer ring,
being larger than what probably came on your bike may foul the
chainstays, so I'd try before I buy, or at the very least, check there
is plenty of clearance between big ring and chainstay.

  4. Danny,

You could try chainging the rear-cassette rather than the front
chainrings. I used to have a 'megarange' cassette that had 11-34 teeth on
the rear - you may have to upgrade your rear-mech if you choose this
    option.

My bike shop informs me that 'real cyclists don't use megarange' but it
has worked OK for me. There's a huge jump between some of the gears, but I
treated my 21-speed like an 18 speed with one extra 'cop-out' gear that
was a lifesaver on those rare occasions when I needed it.

  5. Thanks for the responses

I might just have to stick with the 48t set up
