Chain size

Chain width is determined by rear cog spacing. 9s cogs are closer
together than 8s cogs so any index/click shift system is optimized by
the proper width chain. So with the thinner 9s chain, it may not shift
as well.

Remove the -not from email

My current beater bike is running a 9 speed LX crank and chainrings, an 8
speed XT cassette, 9 speed deore mechs and a 9 speed Dura Ace chain. Works
fine.

Probably not. If your front der has tended to require a slight
overshift at times, using a 9s chain will accentuate that tendency.
There is a possibility that with the 9s chain, a front der that
previously was dead on target would require a slight overshift to get
a crisp change, but it can sometimes be eliminated with a little
trimming of the adjustments if it happens, and it may not even be a
factor at all. The 9s chain definitely will not cause a problem on an
8s rear, regardless of the der used.
