A lot of chain devices attach to the bottom bracket, so I'm guessing you'll have to remove the BB.
It's not that hard to do - a 30 minute job or so.

Is the only way of getting it out going to be removing the bottom bracket? ... Or is there some
magical person out there who knows what else I could do?

Your bike has a ISCG bracket built into the bottom bracket of the bike frame. In order to remove the
mount flange you have to loosen the bottom bracket then unscrew the flange off the ISCG bracket and
pop it off. Tighten the bottom bracket back and you're back in business.
