Chain guide won't fit seat post

Try a dedicated compact FD as well.....

I made one from a piece of plastic that came with a heart rater
monitor - cut it in half and held it on with a cable tie.

This is on a Trek with a weird-sized/shaped seat tube.

12 cm? WTF? That's nearly twice the length of the BB, and well over
the distance between many cranks.

Alternate approach: get one of the fders that has a bracket that is
sandwiched in under the right BB flange; the bracket will protect the
seatpost from damage quite nicely.

Of course, simply adjusting the vertical position and inner limit
screw on your existing fder should solve the problem...
