Ok, I just began Mountain biking this summer when I came across a fisher HKEK for a good deal. I've been riding this bike all summer for what I would consider moderately rough XC riding. It's now taken the toll on this 8 year old bike. The main concern for me right now is that my chain falls off under power now, not when i'm riding easy flat things, but when I ride rough bumpy terrain and try to apply a lot of power. It's getting worse and my knees are really starting the pay the price. The chain will generally make a nasty noise and pop off what chainring it was on and fall twoards the bike (onto the bottom bracket). I've degreased and regreased everything to no luck. I'm leaning at just getting a new cassette and chain, is there anything else you folks think might be wrong?

Check the chainrings for wear as well, if they are bad, replace them when you replace the other bits.
check for bent teeth on the chainrings but you probly need to replace your drivetrain which means chain, cassette, chainrings, replace the derallieur pulley wheels while your at it too.
There is a tool that will let you measure chainwear (if it has streched). Mine after around 6 months was stretched about 1/2" so yours after 8 years could be. That will lead to worn sprockets and maybe the small chainring. Mine sliped in some of the more used sprockets, I put a new chain and things got worse so I had to buy a new cassette to, after a while I needed new chainrings since the chain seemed to get stucked in the front.
