Centering a new crankset ?

Something sounds amiss; normally, there will be more clearance (between
crank arm and frame) on the chainring side. Make sure you've got the correct
bottom bracket for your application. Putting a spacer between the frame and
the bottom bracket on the chainring side could do bad things for your chain
alignment.

By the way, a 2mm offset isn't all that much to worry about. Very few people
are really sensitive to such issues, although there was a time when many
obsessed about "Q-factor" (the width of the cranks as measured at the
pedals). Mountain bikes generally have a pretty wide Q-factor compared to
road bikes, yet people switch between them all the time with no ill effect.
