To the OP: There are some sort of phone holders available that attach to
the top of your stem. I've seen some in use - over here in Korea, land of
the world's highest per capita cell phone saturation. Don't know if you can
get this sort of thing where you live.

While I agree that this can be one of the nice things
about bicycling, it aint necessarily so. For some of us
bicycling is often just about getting from one place to
another and we might need to haul a phone while doing
so.

The best way is to have a nextel-type situation on a
shoulder strap. That way you can keep two hands on
the bars while someone squacks in your ear. It is also
possible to carry a regular phone in the front pocket,
back pocket, or in a pack on the back (on the body not
the bike), with a cord to an earpiece. Wind noise is
often a problem with this method. It is better to pull
over than one-hand it with phone to ear.

I appreciate your comment, but I am not interested in the argument whether
you should or shouldn't carry/use cell phone on a bike. I can almost
argue for either side.
I am only interested in ideas to make cell phone use easier/safer on a bke
for those people who decided to use it.

and safer.?
To me, watching a cue sheet while riding causes more distraction. I am also
interested in finding a safer method
to find the correct route without stopping a bike.

is pretty spotty. That includes some roads as well as trails.
People are getting more used to the cellphone as a crutch in
general. Relying on it on the bike and not being prepared by
carrying flat-fixing gear, tools, enough water, being careful
not to fall in big holes, etc is a big mistake. You may never
do such a thing, but it's more common now to see riders whose first
impulse is to reach for the cell and that's probably one of the
things G.T. is reacting to.

BTW, this all goes triple for hikers. People with no experience or
planning get out in the woods expecting modern telecoms to be their
fallback ...

I never thought that using cell phone on a bike bothers other people.
I have never heard anybody get killed by a biker distracted by a cell phone.
On a bike trail, I often hear a group of bikers taking each other. It
doesn't bother me.
I don't see why taking to a cell phone is any worse.. It is probably
quieter.

There have been quite a few articles in the lasts 4 or 5 years that address
the phenomena of people going further into the back country while unprepared
except for a cell phone.

I also witnessed the gross misuse of rescue crews at the last off-road race
I attended at the Johnson Valley SVRA. Actually I was quite surprised how
good cell reception was 20 miles from the nearest pavement and without a
tower in sight. Anyway, before cell coverage was so good a limited few on
the rescue crews at races had decent radios and injured riders were triaged
and rarely, and I mean twice in the 10 years that I raced, were helicopters
called in. Now, any time someone falls over and sprains their ankle someone
is on the cell phone calling the Sheriff's Dept, which happened at the last
race I attended, rather than driving them into the nearest town for X-Rays.

And even in the cases of severe injury those cell phones still haven't saved
any lives out at the races as far as I know.
