I think that flu is dreadful. I do not underestimate it. But let's
run the numbers and see what happens. The claim is that more than
36,000 Americans die every year of the flu. Now, where I live, 5
people have died. Since we are about half way through the flu season,
we could guess that about 10 people will die of the flu this year in
our town. Our area is the hardest hit in the USA. Our area is almost
exactly 1/700th of the US population. So, if I multiply 10 by 700, I
get, ah.... 7000. That is less than 1/5th of the reported deaths that
we can expect in the US. Advocacy groups lie.
I suppose that if there were an advocacy group for truth telling, that
they would claim a much higher incidence of lying than there actually
was.
The flu is dreadful. It kills. The word "flu" should never be used
in the same sentence as "a cold". My 33 year old wife was down for 28
days with the flu, and she would scream at the top of her lungs the
pain was so bad. When I had the flu the last time, I wanted to die.
But there is no excuse for lying. Lying generates a lack of respect
for our institutions.
