Well I tried it on my cateye and it worked.
this type... it says nothing in the instructions about this feature.

Seems to work for all lights having more than two modes - regardless of make.

Not quite. My 3-LED Cateye rear blinkies have 5 modes, but no shutoff
feature that you mention. It would be handy though! It's very tough
to see the blinkie (mounted on the back of my helmet), so I need to
remember which mode the light is in. For group trail riding, tail
lights are an annoyance and need to be turned off (or at least set
steady)...but riding on the street is a different story.
