I was planning a gentle day out on Carn Mairg and the neighbouring munro when my research stumbled on the fact that this munro to the south east of Carn Mairg has changed it's name. All the SMC sourced books I and my wife have refer to the peak at MR 695496, spot height 981m as Creag Mhor - but the current OS maps have it as Meall na Aighean as the summit at that point. Interestingly older OS maps have no name against the highest point - Creag Mhor being the best part of 2 km away at 822m.
When did this happen? And do current Munros Tables, etc give it this 'new' (?) name or is this an OS map peculiarity only. If it was missing from the old maps why has it appeared now ?
An Old Munro Book calls it Creag Mhor but on an old OS Landranger it is unnamed.
In print outs I have it says " the Munro Meall nan Aighean, called Creag Mhor". My Memory Map has both knolls marked with their heights and the hill called Meall nan Aighean.
I don't know when this occured but it appears that it is now called Meall nan Aighean. Maybe part of this hill was called Creag Mhor and this was mistakenly used as the summit name.
There will be records held by The Scottish Mountaineering Club as to when this change took place and why.

Rob
I'd noticed that as well when we did the same 4 hills on Sunday.
My SMC book (2003 reprint) has it down as Meall na Aighean but another reference (www.stuartstuart.fsnet.co.uk) has it down as the other name.

The current edition of the Tables says: "Creag Mhor in previous editions. The 1:25,000 sheet makes clear that the earlier name refers to a feature some distance from the summit".

I think someone should have said to the SMC "So, what's new?" On the 7th Series 1" Creag Mhor clearly designates the pimple at 713488.
Historically there may have been more justification for the use of the name by Munro. My earliest set of Tables is relatively late (1969 edition). however in that Creag Mhor (Section 3 in those days) is placed in grid square 69 49 but the footnote claims "On the 1in. map the name is 1/2m. E. of the top" while on my edition of the map the name is some 1.5 miles ESE of the summit. This suggests that the OS has moved the position of the name on later editions of the map and possibly even previously identified the pimple at 706495 (904m on 1:50000) as Creag Mhor.
Incidentally Meall na Aighean seems to be another of those instances where the original surveyors surveyed only up to cloud level. On the 1" the 3100' contour encloses an area rather larger than the 950m contour on the 1:50000 and the area within is entirely blank - no higher contours and no spot heights.
