Good day - I've recently purchased my first set of carbon clinchers. Reynolds MV32C UL laced with a PT, SL+ hub. A really nice (and light) wheelset. I purchased this wheelset because I wanted to get into training with power and was looking for a good all-around wheelset, suitable for training and racing - on the advice of friends and Andy from Competitive Cyclist.com, I purchased the MV32Cs.
The concern I have is related to the 'issues' that carbon clinchers are known for. Overheating during breaking and other issues associated with wear and tear. I've also seen tires "roll over" or "roll off the rim" on all carbon rims under hard cornering during a race. I race mostly criteriums and, given the amount of cornering, you can understand why this would be a concern of mine.
Up until now, I've had aluminum rim clincers. Aluminum rim with carbon flange. These have worked great for me but, with the addition of a PT hub, the weight can get up there. As an example, I recently sold my Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLs that came in at just over 1700g. With a PT hub this might be closer to 1800g.
In any case, I thought a carbon clincher would afford be the convenience benefit of a clincher and the weight benefit of a full carbon wheel. Now that I start to go over the potential issues and the potential to seriously hurt myself if either of the wheels fail during a crit or other race, I'm starting to get a little nervous.
