Canti Swapout

My experience was just the opposite. I've used both, same bike (cross/rain bike), and the Avid's are
much more powerful, IMO. I wouldn't even put them in the same class, the Avid's stop so much better.

My old tourer has XT's on it, but mostly because I haven't swapped them out, and don't demand the
same quick perf from them.

Depends on how old the XTs are. the older the better. I guess it was the search for ankle clearance
that lead to "low profile" regressive leverage designs that "servo wave" levers were to correct.
Since I will assume tourer has drop bars, the Avid "mid profile" design and the older XTs of
similar design are the way to go. While not free, mini Vees are great if tire/fender issues allow
their use. Tom

I am in the same "I'm too old to astonish that easily" category.
I have Avids on some of my bikes and XT cantis on others.
First, there are differences amongst the vaious models of each manufacturer. .... Avid 4, 6, 15 and so on; wide version and narrow version of Shimano's XT.
I think you will find that set up, actual brake shoes, rims, and how clean the surfaces are on the mating areas of shoes and rims; will make more difference than the model and brand... at least within Avid Shorties Vs Shimano XT's.
We use Shimanos on one of our tandems and Avids on the other.

I just recently built up another touring bicycle. I usually read through the instructions that come with each product to make sure I am doing everything that the manufacturer tells me. I never quit learning. I notice that even Sheldon indicates that his article is a "Work-In-Progress". My last lesson learned was to use as little as practical return spring tension at the brakes.
One last comment: remember that is the pads wear, the "toe-in" you initally set gets "worn away".
