As I have stated in previous posts, my first love (recumbent that is) will always be a LWB low BB bike. I took my 99 Stratus to work yesterday instead of my 2003 Strada for the first time in probably 6 weeks. By the end of my commute, I was reminded of how natural the riding position is and how it inspires confidence for me as the rider. Yet because of a rear brake cabling problem, I switched back to the Strada today. Wow! For a totally different set of reasons, I love that bike! I guess it's like owing a Lincoln Town Car and a Mazda Miata. You can drive and enjoy both for totally different reasons. I think the great thing about recumbents are the very different choices available to the rider!
Hi Jim, Well said below. I would add that I love riding both my Bacchetta Corsa highracer and my Jamis Dakar mountain bike. Both are great bikes in their natural elements. I could not limit myself to just one recumbent either. I have all types and enjoy each on their own terms. However, there are certain types of recumbents that I will want for touring and other types for just around town.
I think everyone needs at least one LWB and one SWB. I also like to play around with the height of the crank, but sadly I can no longer tolerate a high crank. Most recent recumbents seem to have very high cranks. I think it is nothing but a fashion that will soon pass and we will get back to more normal level cranks one of these days. Cranks that are much above the seat do not really work at all well for many folks.
