same as the title... i want to switch to 10 speed, but have a pretty new 9spd ultegra derailleur that i was wondering if i could effectively use.

Generally, Shimano components are back compatible, the 9 speed (Ultegra) derailleur will work OK with an 8 speed chain and cassette.

The derailleur doesn't know if there is a 9spd cassette or a 10spd cassette, thats delt with by the shifters. As 10spd is narrower than9spd there will be no problems what so ever.
