  1. 52/42, 52/39 ??? Is there really any difference?? Has anybody really noticed? Do a few notches in a different pattern on the inner side of the outer campagnolo chainrings affect gear changing that much?

Can I change the inner chainring from 42 to 39 for hilly terrain without forking out for an extra outer one?

Is this only a campagnolo fashion fad?

    Thanks for any ideas!

No faashion fad,it what's current and it works better. Sure just change to a 39. The low gear inch difference is 46 vs 49, assuming a 23 large cog

  3. optimal, but not essential.

shimano does the same thing with their 53-A (for 42T inner) vs. 53-B (for 39T inner) chainrings.
